Hemorrhoids are an extremely common condition caused by an overgrown network of blood vessels in the anorectal area, and chronic bleeding is usually the symptom that brings patients in for treatment. Rather than cutting away the hemorrhoidal tissue, hemorrhoid embolization works by reducing the arterial blood flow feeding it. A thin catheter is used to reach the small arteries supplying the hemorrhoids, which are then selectively blocked with tiny coils. As a minimally invasive hemorrhoid treatment, it avoids rectal wounds, preserves anal function, and requires no aftercare wound dressing.
